Arrival
Plan to arrive 5 minutes prior to your lessonʼs start time. Unpack your violin in the hallway, and get your music ready! Students who are late cannot be guaranteed their full lesson time.
Required Materials
Please remember to bring to each lesson your violin, shoulder or sponge rest, pencil, all assigned music and notebooks.
Attendance
You are responsible for attending all of your lessons. All lessons must be paid whether or not you attend.
Snow days
Red Barn follows the Amherst Public Schools schedule, so if school is canceled due to
severe weather, then Red Barn is closed.
Parental Involvement
For students under 10 years, a parent or guardian is expected to attend every lesson
and supervise daily practice.
Practice
Students are expected to practice 5 days a week. Lesson time does not count as a practice session:)) Practice time requirements will vary from student to student; ask me for specifics about your childʼs daily practice needs. For younger students, the parent will have a key role in helping the student accomplish a daily practice routine. Family vacation, illness, or other crisis are always an exception to the practice requirements, but please try to make me aware of these extenuating circumstances as soon as they arise so I can work with you.
Recitals
There will be at least 2 studio recitals per year; a fall semester recital (December) and spring recital (June). A small fee may be collected before the recital to pay the accompanist for his/her time for both rehearsal and concert. Specifics will be provided closer to the recital date. Dress for the recitals is semi-formal. Girls should be in a below-the-knee or at knee dress, or skirt and blouse, or slacks and blouse. Boys should be in slacks and a nice shirt. No sneakers!
Registration and Tuition
Tuition is payable by the semester and is due at the first lesson of each semester. Each semester is comprised of 17 weeks (17 lessons) followed by a two week make-up period that follows the Amherst schools calender. Lessons are $30 per half-hour lesson. An installment plan is available, which would break the tuition into 3 payments.
Cancellation and Make-up
Please keep in mind that tuition pays for reserved time and not the actual lesson itself. Lessons missed by the student without notice will not be refunded for any reason. Lessons will be made up if 24 hours notice is given. In case of cancelation due to illness, family emergency, or snow day, and with proper notification, lessons will be offered at a mutually exclusive time. Lessons canceled by choice (a game, extended vacation, test, party, I havenʼt practiced, I forgot) will not be made up. Even though we try to make-up all lessons by the end of the semester, Red Barn teachers are only required to make up a maximum of 2 lessons and they will not be carried over into the following semester. If I am absent, either a substitute will be provided, or I will makeup
the lesson at a mutually agreeable time.
